W hotel, Atlanta

  • Went up to Atlanta for househunting. Found a $79 rate at the W hotel in Atlanta (north perimeter, just outside Perimeter Mall).

What a goofy place. I just DON'T get it.

This is raging suburbia. All the "Armani" and blonde wood seemed strange. Valet parking for $9 just across the street from the shopping mall. No newspapers at the snack bar thing in the lobby at 8 AM on Sunday ("oh, we'll have to have the bellhop go out and get one"). Room OK comfortable, but various tackinesses (stained grout in bathtub, sink faucet loose in the holes on the sink), etc etc.

My room overlooked...the parking lot of the mall. My view (12th floor) was of the Cinema I-IV (anyone who grew up in the seventies knows the look of the sign for General Cinemas--heavy serif type).

My verdict--the W in Atlanta is a fish out of water. Would have been appropriate in Buckhead or Downtown.

Funny vignette--I was meeting a job candidate in the lobby for brunch on Sunday. The restaurnant at the W got a terrible review, so we went somewhere else. When I met him, he said "Oh, I'm glad I found you. The desk clerk told me to go to the Banana Republic meeting in the meeting room".

    Strange place.

  • Hmmm...jamiel, sounds like they might have moved that hotel from California...

  • The W in NYC is a similar theme... I felt like I was in the middle of an Armani fashion show. The Front Desk people talked with this tone like "We are so important."

It was a nice hotel. I loved my room. But so pretenious.

The only plus of that hotel: Randy Garber's restaurant right in the hotel.
The Minus: Mrs. Garber was not there that night.

I'm not into Mrs. Garber but if you want to know who she is... e-mail me!!! http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • Check the latest issue of "Travel & Leasure" where they have done an article on the W hotels.

They reviewed the one in NYC and Atlanta. Jamiel: Maybe you hotel looked wierd because it was converted from another property (Sheraton?) in only six week so it's like cut and paste.

But it is a wierd place. I feel so underdressed walking in to the W with just a "What part of Upgrade Don't you Understand" tee shirt and beat up jeans and Converse High tops (I will not wear a suit on weekends unless necessary.) All I wanted was to go to my room and take a nap.

I think Starwood has taken the boutique concept a bit far. But watch out: another W is planned for Union Square, NYC (where they had all those protests in the 60's and 70's)
later this year and other cities.
