Meat market/butcher shop recommendations?

  • I saw this thread over in the Chicago Forum and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for DC. Since DC is such a sprawl now, let's define/confine it as and to inside the beltway.

I know there are several wholesale type markets over by 4th and Florida NE. I believe that some of them have retail markets in them. I went into one of them once, but it seemed like one of those places where you can't get what you want unless you know who and how to ask for it.

  • I always liked the meat counter (s) at Eastern Market. ^

You can stroll thru and find everything you need:

    The right cut of meat
    Fresh fruits & vegetables
    Tasty breads and desserts

Grab a bottle of wine and your dinner prep is complete. :)

  • I may have to modify my earlier suggestion - there was a fire early this morning at Eastern Market and the butcher, fish-monger, etc. have been burned out of their spaces for now...

  • Interesting that you use that description - i was talking to a real estate developer a few weeks ago who was referring to the development in Penn Quarter on F Street between 9th and 10th and compared it to a "European style" of shops with a Cheese Shop that is already there, a chocolate shop that is going in and a few others including a possible specialty butcher, but no timetable as most of the retail space is only recently re-developed and largely empty at this point.

cheese and chocolate are easy. high margins, and a minimum number of low skill employees. meat is different. can't get the margins, and takes a bit of talent to butcher meat and it is high labor content.

most of the stands at eastern market are owned and operated by the same person, and that family has been there since before most of us were born. or at least were. union meat by the glascows, the fish market by glasco relatives, caloromis has a produce stand(all from the 60's or earlier). the food stand changed hands about 30 years ago. same with the cheese stand.

the rents at eastern market are very very low compared to the rest of the urban/capitol hill world. the entire glasco family worked in the union meat booth. they could never survive the rent in a store front.

  • I also like the one over at Eastern Market. In addition to the butcher, there's also a poultry vendor (they sell chickens, cornish game hens, turkeys, quail, etc.), a fishmonger, and a dairy vendor (cheese is their specialty). There are other vendors there as well who sell various specialty items.

  • The butcher tended to be the neighbor butcher. DC does not really have European neighborhoods, so no butchers of that sort.

there are halal(sp) butchers that I know of.

there are also wholesale places that sell to retail, if you wish to purchase a NZ venesion leg, or something like that.

other than that, I think that the best meats are to be found at the upscale markets. some have stupid sales as they are trying to break into the market.

check out http://www.shopbloom.com/. talk about trying to buy into a market

  • There is Leif and "Swedish Fish" in Arlington. Last time I googled him the first hit is some USDA (or FDA) complaint about his sanitary conditions. Reminded me of the food inspector in Fawlty Towers.

This is a bit dated on fish:

there are a couple of kosher butchers up in MD, but other than those you don't really see butchers very often these days anywhere

  • My Latin American friends who cook/grill, including those from Argentina, swear by this little meat market in Clarendon - El Chaparral (http://www.yelp.com/biz/D0hN5mX75_AcL1YGp5dxQQ).

  • I've had a few emails on the topic and here are a few of the better places to by fish:
    Slavins (Arlington)
Han Ah Rhum (various locations including Baltimore and Merrifield)
    Wholefoods
    Balduccis
Icelandic market that has moved from Arlington to Jessup
