If you are in paid C you get 25% bonus, taking it to 20,000. That is a free ticket anywhere in NZ to anywhere in OZ in the future for you or someone else - which can be Broome or Perth or Darwin etc - a VERY expensive flight from NZ! Or it is close to a round trip ANYWHERE UA flies in the USA one day - a few flights on ANY Star * carrier booked to UA and you are there. There is a 4000 point debut on-line booking bonus on UA as I recall, so maybe do the SAN-LAX as a seperate on-line ticket with UA, and get that 4000 and add to the 16,000 flown?

Air New Zealand partners with United, not American. American's partner is Qantas, which is part of OneWorld. 60,000 AA miles gets you a coach round trip to Australia; 105,000 gets you business class; 135,000 gets you first class. You can also get there on Cathay Pacific, another one of AA's partners, as well, but the routing is through Hong Kong. I've done that - and it's a VERY long trip.
You say "transfer the miles back to AA" as if the miles originally came from AA. Is that actually true? If not, where did the miles actually come from? Just curious.
When are you headed to Australia?
