Aussie trip advice?

  • I got stuck on NZair on my next trip down under. Is there any way to transfer the miles back to AA? I feel like these are dead miles. Any advice would be appreciated. Does NZ partner with any major US carriers?

  • Do enroll with a star program (incl UA) and search the BBs here for the optimal conversions. You are already on the right track with HH but you will lose a lot in conversions though.

  • Leave them as UA points is my tip. You will get about 16,000 miles on a simple SAN-SYD, (and Air NZ will fly you United anyway between SAN and LAX!) even if you have zero status with UA. UA account is free, give Air NZ your UA # for the booking.

If you are in paid C you get 25% bonus, taking it to 20,000. That is a free ticket anywhere in NZ to anywhere in OZ in the future for you or someone else - which can be Broome or Perth or Darwin etc - a VERY expensive flight from NZ! Or it is close to a round trip ANYWHERE UA flies in the USA one day - a few flights on ANY Star * carrier booked to UA and you are there. There is a 4000 point debut on-line booking bonus on UA as I recall, so maybe do the SAN-LAX as a seperate on-line ticket with UA, and get that 4000 and add to the 16,000 flown?

  • Edog,

Air New Zealand partners with United, not American. American's partner is Qantas, which is part of OneWorld. 60,000 AA miles gets you a coach round trip to Australia; 105,000 gets you business class; 135,000 gets you first class. You can also get there on Cathay Pacific, another one of AA's partners, as well, but the routing is through Hong Kong. I've done that - and it's a VERY long trip.

You say "transfer the miles back to AA" as if the miles originally came from AA. Is that actually true? If not, where did the miles actually come from? Just curious.

When are you headed to Australia?

  • Thanks for your response. Heading to Sydney in three weeks. Client booked me on NZ air. I requested Quantas so I could get AA mileage benefits on the trip. I don't have any affiliation with UA so these end up being dead miles to me. I suppose I can transfer them over to hilton points. any other thoughts on how to make this worthwhile?
