Holiday Inn to AAdvantage awards

I have recently came across an interesting feature on the Priority Club. If I purchase an AA award of a US to Europe trip using 161,250 points, in the off season this equates to 40,000 AA miles for the same trip. This is a similar ratio of 10,000 Priority points to 2,500 AA miles.

But, if you look at the 'small print' on the Priority Club web site a US to Europe award is actually 60,000 AA miles credited to your account, and you then have to contact AA to book the flight. This is a much better ratio.

Question is: Do I have to book the flight or can I just leave the 60,000 miles for other uses, e.g. upgrades, etc?

Does anybody have experience of this?

Thanks.
